Our Behaviours Framework

The Behaviours Framework is designed to create a shared understanding across the organisation of what we mean when we refer to that behaviour, and how it may look when we or our colleagues behave in those ways.

Our Core Principles outline what we expect from our organisation and the way we work; and our core behaviours outline how we should act and behave in our work and in our interactions with others. The Behaviours are described in terms of expectations and impact.

Within the Behaviours Framework there are:
• descriptions of each behaviour
• examples of the qualities and expectations of that behaviour
• examples of the sort of impact we would expect to see that behaviour have in the organisation
• signs that the behaviour isn’t being shown.

The Recruitment Process

The Core Principles and Behaviours set out what we would like to see from our leaders and employees, so naturally we use them in our selection processes (alongside assessment of Professional Knowledge and Skills) to identify the right people for the right roles. This also allows you as a candidate to get an idea of how we like to do things at Devon County Council.

The selection process you have been invited to take part in has been designed to allow you to demonstrate the way you approach your work and how you interact with others. It will be made up of different elements to give you opportunities to show us the way you like to work. The process may not feel that different from other interviews you have had, and will likely consist of an interview and at least one other exercise, but it is the way you will be assessed which is important and perhaps new to you.

We will use the Core Principles and Behaviours to score what you tell us and what you show us to make sure you are a great fit for our organisation and we are a great fit for you.

In preparation for your assessment day, think about how you approach your work and interact with others, alongside using this Sway to understand what our Core Principles and Behaviours are and how they are displayed. The Behaviours Framework at the end of the Sway provides you with more information on the Core Behaviours and their associated expectations, but please note it is not necessary to assimilate the level of detail in the Behaviours Framework for your interview. Above all, you should continue to be your authentic self throughout the selection process.
