Director of Children and Young People’s Futures (DCS)

Do it for Devon. Do it for every child’s future.

We’re seeking a bold, compassionate, and visionary leader to drive our whole-system approach to improving outcomes for children, young people, and families. As our statutory Director of Children’s Services, you’ll lead our Families First vision, embed restorative practice across services, and work closely with partners in education, health, and social care.

This is a unique opportunity to lead with purpose, shape the future of children’s services, and make a lasting difference in one of the most beautiful counties in the UK.

About the Role

As DCS, you’ll lead our vision for Families First—a whole-system approach to improving outcomes for children, young people, and families. You’ll oversee a gross revenue budget of over £1.1 billion, lead a workforce of more than 1,623 FTE, and work closely with partners across education, health, and social care to deliver real impact.

We are open about the challenges we face. Our most recent Ofsted inspection acknowledged that while the overall judgement remains inadequate, significant progress has been made since the last visit. The report highlights the foundations now in place for sustained improvement, and we are confident that the service is on a positive trajectory. This role is central to continuing that momentum and delivering the change our children and families deserve.

You’ll work at the heart of local democracy, supporting Devon’s newly elected Council and helping shape strategic decisions that reflect the voices of children, families, and communities across the county. You’ll be part of a collaborative and ambitious Strategic Leadership Team, committed to delivering better outcomes and a fairer future for all.

But it’s also a county with real challenges and real ambition. This is your chance to lead in a place where your work matters—and where you can enjoy space, nature, and a strong sense of belonging.
